Big Cypress Fox Squirrel
Also called the mangrove fox squirrel and the Everglades fox squirrel, the Big Cypress fox squirrel is darker on its belly and back than fox squirrels in north and central Florida. This squirrel is active during the day and spends far more time foraging on the ground than the much more common gray squirrel. Its favorite food is the seeds of the slash pine. It also eats other seeds, nuts, fruits, and flower buds. The Big Cypress fox squirrel inhabits open pinelands, dry cypress strands, and coastal hammocks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering listing the Big Cypress fox squirrel as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
